Letters, June 30: Danielle Smith doesn't listen to average Albertans Back to video
NOT OUR MONEY
They’re not about us. They’re just about themselves, even though we elected them. This describes Danielle Smith’s UCP running Alberta today. Your party just got re-elected a year ago. When did you stop listening to Albertans? Or did we ever matter outside of when an election mattered to you Danielle? I’m sick of feeling that a $4-billion-plus surplus this year is the UCP’s money, not ours as Albertans. One year in, we allowed you to run Alberta. Feels to me like you people don’t really care about us.
DARYL COTE
(Smith’s out of touch with average Albertans on this issue.)
SWIMMIN’ IN CASH
A yearly ritual in Edmonton is to pack up the kids and hit the highway for a day trip in search of a nearby lake within an hour or so from Edmonton. Edmonton should have a swimmable lake! It’s long overdue. The new NE Edmonton park could have been a good location. Anywhere around or close to the Henday would be ideal. Over $300 million the province gave Calgary to help support building their new arena that Edmonton didn’t get could help, if the province cared to hand out the cash.

KEVIN KELLER
(A break on taxes would be even better.)
KUDOS, EDMONTON
As a self-proclaimed superfan, my anxiety and emotional investment in the fortunes of the Oilers are unmatchedly profound. Having waited years (18, to be exact) for a season for the ages, my biggest takeaway is not only the team’s performance(s), highlighted by Connor, but how gracious and mature he was in the aftermath of Game 7. We didn’t win the ultimate prize, but I’m also now a fan of Connor the person. Shout out also to Edmontonians for exemplary conduct throughout and in the aftermath.
PETE BROWN
(Connor McDavid has become a true leader.)
DYING CITY?
Edmonton is a city that’s dying. The office vacancies Downtown are growing by the day. Businesses are leaving and they are not coming back. The Downtown airport used to bring in business from up north, but after the city closed it down, money goes elsewhere. It’s only a matter of time before Edmonton becomes the next Detroit.
RICHARD PLUIM
(Edmonton’s population grew by 4.4 per cent last year and job growth was 5.2 per cent. International connections at the Edmonton International Airport and Downtown development have both significantly improved since the city centre airport closed.)
